In order to share our archives and local knowledge more widely the Society is looking for help with:
Founded in 1973 the Society has acquired a large collection of documents, photographs, paintings and objects of interest connected with the development of Harpenden, its buildings, businesses, organisations, interesting people, and key events.
With a membership of over 250 it holds monthly speaker meetings on a variety of topics, quarterly exhibitions, occasional visits to places of interest, and has a dedicated team of researchers working in its small temporary home in Park Hall, providing stories for the society website www.harpenden-history.org and for three newsletters per year and occasional publications.
The long term ambition of the society is for a proper Museum of Harpenden, with adequate storage for its archives and a working area for its research team. Meanwhile it encourages members of the society and the wider public to provide their own memories and to write articles for the website or newsletter. Other societies in Harpenden are encouraged to provide short histories of their organisations.
