2nd Harpenden Scout Group
Objectives of the Organisation
The 2nd Harpenden Scout Group was reformed in 2010 after having been dormant since 1984. This was in response to a very long waiting list to join beavers, cubs and scouts. Thanks to around 25 volunteer parents serving as uniformed leaders but also as treasurer, secretary, subs manager and so on, we now provide scouting weekly for over 100 young people at our hut in Tallents Crescent, Batford. We have 4 evening meetings a week, and the hut is also used by an art class twice a week and as a scout shop on Saturday mornings.
Volunteer Hut Manager, 2nd Harpenden
Location: Tallents Crescent, Harpenden
Commitment: 1 hour a week and occasional longer sessions
The responsibilities are as follows:
To visit the hut once a week to inspect for anything needing attention, and to change toilet rolls and paper towels and possibly bins (there is a separate paid fortnightly contract cleaner).
To read meters and monitor energy consumption.
To carry out minor repairs and maintenance personally, such as trimming hedges, mowing the small lawn, changing light bulbs, tidying, fixing door handles and so on.
To procure quotes for specialist repairs as and when necessary, meeting contractors on site for estimating purposes and to provide access when work is commissioned, liaising with treasurer for payment. This needs midweek availability.
To monitor the long term condition of the building and to identify improvements which could be carried out to improve the scouting experience, and to advise the Group Scout Executive.
To be a member of the Group Scout Executive committee, meeting three times a year.
To co-ordinate an annual Love The Hut day when we encourage parents to turn up for maintenance tasks that need more hands.
To get involved a little bit with the scouting activities, perhaps supporting the occasional evening or camp, so that it feels more like you are part of the team than an unknown maintenance animal.
For the last item, we would need you to run through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, but that is very painless.
The role is supervised by the GSE Chairman and/or the Group Scout Leader.
